[...] There is a sub-sub-genre of achingly-hip brass bands around at the moment, including The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble from Chicago and the Hot 8 Brass Band from New Orleans. And now, from our very own London town, we have the Hackney Colliery Band. (To appreciate the irony of the name, for people not familiar with London, Hackney is a rough but trendy borough to the east of the city, and a far cry from the mining towns in the North of England that are the usual home to traditional colliery bands). So, can these guys compete with the big American heavyweights? There are many similarities between them, including the big sousaphone-led tunes, the bass drum heavy rhythms and the unorthodox cover versions, but the HCB seem to do it their own way – the rhythms are much tauter than the loose style of the others, the diversity of tunes is greater (from big pop covers to melancholic ballads) and the covers are even more eccentric. And it is the cover versions where the HCB really come into their own. There is ‘No Diggity’ (originally by Blackstreet) and ‘Use Somebody’ (a far superior version than The Kings Of Leon’s), but our favourite must be the transformation of Toto’s ‘Africa’ into an uplifting and inspirational anthem (see the video below). The album’s price is worth it for this track alone, but we strongly suggest that you invest your time and money in the full set and see how some English southerners can make it big alongside the heavy guns from the States. ‘Hackney Colliery Band’ will be released on 4th July 2011 on Wah Wah 45s.
