iTunes Best of 2010 list? We’re all over it!

23 Dec 2010 / 0 Comments / in All news, News, Scrimshire, Stac, The Hackney Colliery Band/by Adam

So it’s with a great deal of pride that we have finished up this amazing year with THREE Wah Wah tracks in the iTunes R&B/Soul Best of 2010 list.

There are about 71 tracks in the list and we are three of them. Our lovely winners are:

  • Scrimshire – The Low Road (Rapson Remix)/I Was Love
  • Stac – Turn That Light Out
  • Hackney Colliery Band – Money/What’s the time, Mr. Wasp?

Look at Stac in amazingly good company in the top 23 Soul albums here.

Massive congratulations to everyone involved in those releases. It’s a lovely way to finish off a year of some of our best releases to date.

And there is SO much more to come next year. Stunning albums, remixes, singles, live shows and more! We cannot wait.

But don’t forget to pick up our final release of the year either – our Christmas EP is raising money for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

Please find it here: http://wahwah45s.bandcamp.com/album/another-wah-wah-christmas-ep and hand over just 2 small pounds for charity.

See you next year!

Newest Wah Wah family member reviews the Scala

09 Dec 2010 / 0 Comments / in News, Resonators, Scrimshire, Stac, The Hackney Colliery Band/by Adam

Such is the state of things at Wah Wah 45s now that myself and Dom are beginning to bend under the weight of jobs that need doing!

Next year promises to be our biggest yet, with a glut of albums from our favourite artists and because of that we thought it was about time to get some help in! So please welcome Miss Vicky Green. Here is a little review from Vicky of the Scala party at the end of November. You can find some photos at the bottom too…
=======

The other week I experienced my first ‘Wah Wah Live’ event held at The Scala in Kings Cross and oh my days did it not disappoint! We arrived early in the day to get cracking with setting up the venue and making it look pretty for the night ahead. My jobs varied between anything that people needed/wanted help with – from hanging Wah Wah 12” sleeves from the ceiling (without getting them tangled, ahem Paul!) to setting up the tables and chairs and decorating the venue.

There was much joking and laughter and I don’t think I’ve seen two men eat so much all you can eat buffet in a long time! We rolled said fatties back to the venue to deal with any last minute issues and with sound checks complete, the doors opened at 9pm. Temperatures weren’t the most tropical but that didn’t stop the soul brothers and sistas from experiencing a night of quality music.

Resonators got things warmed up in room three with their skankin dub reggae and Stac lured us into the main room with her velvety voice, beautiful backing vocalists and band. Later The Hackney Colliery Band started jamming in room three and made their way into the main room in the style of a big brassy conga with some people dancing along behind them.

I was generally floating between the backstage area checking in on the artists and the various rooms soaking up the atmosphere and enjoyed seeing how much fun everyone was having. I had the pleasure of meeting Will Quantic briefly backstage and I have to say he has one of the softest beards I’ve ever felt! Definitely a winner for Decembeard. I wonder whether he uses conditioner on it…? Anyway, I digress. His set later in the night definitely increased the temperature of the main room packing in a big crowd of smilers and dancers – everyone was having an incredible time. One guy was loving it so much he kept trying to show off his dance moves to everyone on the stage (much to the dismay of a nearby bouncer)!

Musical Bingo went down a storm in the top room with the great Jess Indeedy on the mic. I have to say I timed things pretty damn poorly and didn’t manage to take part in an actual game of bingo but every time I was there it seemed as though there were as many people up dancing to the music as there were playing bingo! I was also surprised to see how many of my friends had taken a new shine to this musical game. Perhaps it’s time for a trip down to Mecca Bingo next weekend!

Thanks to Dom, Adam and everyone involved for making it such a success and so much fun to be a part of.

Releases galore this week! Don’t miss out…

07 Dec 2010 / 0 Comments / in All news, News, Resonators, Scrimshire, Stac/by Adam

This is a big week. We don’t know how to wind down at Wah Wah! Although we’re going to try, very soon. But before that…

This week we have some very special new music out. First up is the now traditional Christmas EP! And this year we’re donating all proceeds from sales made on our bandcamp page to the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation! Minimum payment is £2 for 3 gorgeous tracks but you can pay a little more if you would like to make a bigger donation. One track on there from me featuring Rob Hynd, a lovely acoustic number from Stac and a debut from the lovely Stephen McCleery.

Have a listen on the site and hit the buy link to get your copy! Another Wah Wah Christmas EP!

Second up – two immense remixes for the summer beauty that was Sweet love Affair. One from D&B don Cyantific and another from twisted dub master Jstar! these two new versions take the track somewhere a little different, a little more dancefloor, a little more punchy.

Again, you can listen to both Resonators remixes here on this site and buy direct from us!

Check out both these beautiful new records today!

===================

Following on from last year’s magnificent 10th Birthday event, which saw over 1000 people attend, renowned UK record label Wah Wah 45s return to The Scala to showcase some of the imprint’s finest acts, new discoveries, new friends and welcome international guests from across the globe.

On Saturday November 27th we’re bringing together another enormous soundclash of musicians, DJs, beatboxers and VJs to once again give you the biggest and greatest Wah Wah Party known to man.

In the main room you’ll find yourself being warmed up and enchanted by the label’s number one chanteuse – and a lady who’s winning fans as impressive as Mark Ronson, The Mercury Music Prize and The Roots’ ?estlove – Stac. This unique talent will be performing with her full band and incredible 12-piece choir. And that’s just the beginning! We’ve got live sets from brand new Tru Thoughts signings The Hidden Orchestra (think Bonobo meets the Cinematics), and Matt Ford (AKA DJ Format) & Simon James’ new project The Simonsound (featuring Laura J Martin and Debbie Clare) before we unleash another live Wah Wah outfit on your ears in the shape of the fattest brass to come out of the East End since Pat Butcher, The Hackney Colliery Band! This ten piece brass juggernaut have been blowing the roofs off venues far and wide this year, and what better way to finish it off than with a headlining live set at our annual extravaganza.

And we’re not finished there! Room One also plays host to a quartet of the finest DJs known to humankind. Mancunian duo The Unabombers are famed for their legendary Electric Chair nights and seamless DJ sets taking in disco, soul, boogie and house. They don’t play very often in London, so when they do you can expect a roadblock. Similarly, you can expect the same when our co-headliner plays in the big smoke. Since moving to Columbia, Quantic’s UK sets are few and far between, but on the rare occasions he does make it to the capital you can expect to be dazzled by his selection of tropical rarities, hip hop treats, exclusives from his own productions and silky DJ skills. And talking of silky skills, our final guest has them in bucket loads. Maybe not a household name, but German DJ Florian Keller is one of our favourite DJs full stop. His “Party Keller” compilations (Compost Records) are simply brilliant, and his sets, comprising as they do of the finest funk, boogie and old skool rap, are not to be missed! With your favourite Wah Wah residents filling in elsewhere, this is the line-up you’ve been waiting for, and would be more than worth the ticket price alone were it not for two more rooms of musical mayhem!

We’re bringing something very different to Room 2 this year. The boys and girls from Musical Bingo host nights across the capital that combine everyone’s granny’s favourite pastime with quality DJs and a combination of top and rather kitsch prizes. You’ll receive your Musical Bingo card on entry to the venue, and games will take place on the hour between 11pm and 1am on the night.

Finally, in Room 3, we’re proud to present our latest signing, Resonators, who’ll be performing a live acoustic jam at 9pm sharp, so make sure you get down early to catch this extremely talented outfit. Then, we’ve invited one of London’s finest underground parties and Garden Party favourites Boglewaltz to bring their party to our party for one night only! They’ll be joined by some of Europe’s finest eclectic DJs who collectively make up The Scandinavian Jazz Mafia. Special guest DJ Astroboy from Edinburgh will also be stopping by to drop some quality global niceness, and if you need a break from all that, then head to the Wah Wah Shop for limited edition tees, stickers, vinyl and CDs courtesy of Hands On Music.

Optical delights come courtesy of our favourite light surgeons, Exceeda & Jim Hairy Eye.

Get your tickets now!! This is THE event of the year!!!!!
