Lea Lea joins Wah Wah 45s

01 Mar 2013 / 0 Comments / in All news, Lea Lea, News/by Adam

As you should probably be aware by now, we have a new artist in the Wah Wah family.

Lea Lea (formerly Lea Lea Jones) came to our attention in 2012 with her immense AK-47 release on First Word records. A massive sound and forceful production that even then cannot eclipse the strength of Lea Lea’s own commanding delivery – we were hooked.

On hearing a complete album of songs full of the same energy, beautifully crafted and produced with her songwriting team Jack Baker and Kim Garrett, we knew that Lea Lea and Wah Wah 45s were a perfect fit.

So here we are in the lead up to her debut single for us Black Or White. Resounding brass issuing a clarion call for her arrival, this single is epic enough in itself. But add to that a stunning video created by AK-47 collaborators Art War Entertainment (www.aweltd.com) and you have something pretty special.

So join us in welcoming Lea Lea to Wah Wah 45s. Do it by watching the video, by pre-ordering the single which features incredible remixes from Goth Trad, Other Echoes and DJ iZem, by sharing this video with your friends and by saying hello to her on the Lea Lea facebook page.

You can listen again to the live segment of the show here: Colman Brothers’ Cerys On 6Music session

And until Sunday you can hear the whole show again, including music from Henri-Pierre Noel: Cerys On 6 Music Show – Colman Brothers live in session.

For the fourth year in a row renowned UK record label Wah Wah 45s return to The Scala to showcase some of the imprint’s finest acts, new discoveries, new friends and welcome two of Europe’s most legendary DJ collectives and finest sound systems.

On Saturday November 10th we’re bringing together another enormous soundclash of musicians, DJs, MCs, VJs and bingo callers (!) to once again bring you the biggest and greatest Wah Wah Party known to man.

In the main room you’ll find yourself being beautifully warmed up by one of this year’s landmark signings for the label, Miss Bev Lee Harling. Having received the prestigious honour of Album of the Week from Gilles Peterson on BBC 6Music earlier this year, Bev has won an army of fans with her sometimes sweet, sometimes sassy live show that utilises woks, cheese graters and typewriters as well as more standard instrumentation. And that’s just the beginning! We’ve got live sets from Worldwide Jazz Album of the Year award winner Matthew Halsall, who’ll be performing a highly anticipated electro-acoustic set with his trio; another new Wah Wah signing, Paper Tiger, whose heady mixture of post-dubstep and hip hop has won them fans from Lauren Laverne to Homeboy Sandman; French DJ, producer and musician Debruit (Civil Music), whose electronic take on the tropical sound is nothing less than astonishing; and finally the live album launch from our number one dub masters Resonators, whose album “The Constant” is released this autumn on Wah Wah 45s!

And we’re not finished there! Room One also plays host to two of the Europe’s most respective and influential collectives, Jazzanova and Trojan Sound System.

Jazzanova are many things to many different people. For more than fifteen years the eclectic collective from Berlin has been busy producing, composing, arranging, remixing, DJing and generally shaping our musical world – in the clubs, on the air, in the studio, live on stage, and with their label Sonar Kollektiv. From their early underground stardom in the late 90s, due to anthems like “Fedime’s Flight”, to their latest opus “Funkhaus Studio Sessions” and their soulful live show, Jazzanova remain stalwarts of the scene, and some of the finest DJs around.

Having blown our minds earlier this year with a rare London DJ set, we had to invite Jazzanova’s Class Brieler back for more musical goodness. His sets are as eclectic and broad as you would expect, with pin-point mixing skills and the ability to turn a party out. We can’t wait.

Formed in 2004, London based Trojan Sound System are an institution in British sound system culture. A legendary team of selectors and vocalists, they relentlessly tour the globe, representing the most seminal reggae and Ska record label in history. For the past 8 years, Trojan Sound System have spread their message of love and unity through the power of Ska, Roots, Dub, Dancehall and UK bass music, headlining club shows, captivating festival crowds and supporting legendary Jamaican acts such as; Horace Andy, Luciano and the late great, Gregory Isaacs to name but a few.

Transcending age, race and political barriers, Trojan Sound System play music that satisfies the purest of vinyl collectors, while at the same time, introducing a new generation to the roots of Jamaican music. The perfect ‘after-party’ for the Resonators live show!

And as if that wasn’t enough, we’ve also got reggae bootleg don J*Star performing a short set for us and support from your Wah Wah favourites, Servini, Scrimshire, Part-time Heroes, Konvex & Bopperson.

For the third year in a row, Room 2 sees the return of the wonderful Musical Bingo with the irrepressible Jess Indeedy on the mic and DJ Helix spinning those all important tunes. Musical Bingo with Jess Indeedy host nights across the capital, that combine everyone’s granny’s favourite pastime with quality DJs and a combination of top and rather kitsch prizes. You’ll receive your Musical Bingo card on entry to the venue, and games will take place on the hour at 11pm, 12am and 1am on the night.

Finally, in Room 3, we’re proud to present yet another brand new Wah Wah signing, in the shape of soulful trio Maze Hill! Their debut EP is due out this September on Wah Wah 45s and we anticipate that by the time this show comes around you should be rather excited about this early set from this unique outfit. DJs in Room 3 come from two of our favourite collectives, Boglewaltz and Movimientos, who’ll be mixing up tropical, soul and afro-beat sounds with a little r&b, pop and the odd shock selection! And if you need a break from all that, then head to the Wah Wah Shop for limited edition tees, stickers, vinyl and CDs courtesy of Hands On Music. Plus look out for CD signings throughout the night from some of your favourite Wah Wah artists.

Optical delights come courtesy of our favourite light surgeons, Exceeda & Jim.

Get your tickets now!! This is THE event of the year!!!!!
