The Gene Dudley Group represents an outpouring of deep soul and funk music from obscenely talented 27 year-old multi-instrumentalist residing in North London, Gene Dudley.

Both tracks on the debut release from this one-man band were recorded in Gene’s bedroom studio and feature him on trumpet, saxophone, drums, bass, guitar and piano.

New Star

Fans of labels like Truth & Soul and Daptone will relish these sonorous soulful offerings, and will no doubt be hotly anticipating the debut long-player, due for release this summer on Wah Wah 45s.

In the live arena, rather than trying to play all the instruments himself, Gene deploys a quartet of top notch young musicians to help him out (whilst Gene mixes it up between bass and keys throughout the set) as witnessed at the recent Hot 8 Brass Band gig in London, The Gene Dudley Group’s debut live show.

Look out for the band performing live, and watch this space for so much more to come from this new star of the deep funk and soul scene.

“Like it!” Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music, UK)

“Something really special.” Huey Morgan (BBC 6Music, UK)

“Wah Wah 45s’ never-ending hunt for exciting funk talent continues as they introduce the one-man-wonder Gene Dudley. A highly talented multi-instrumentalist, Gene plays every note you hear on this 7”, from the tight raspberry blowing horns to the swish-tickling drums. The title track is a Daptone-esque doo-wop with a neat refrain and simple Q&A structure, while “THe New Lots Of Cooperstown” meanders a little more into sombre soul territory. Two stunning instrumentals, one memorable introduction – Gene Dudley’s talents are likely to take him far.” Juno Records (UK)

“There is no ‘negotiation’. The Gene Dudley Group is the real deal! If you’re a fan of the output from labels such as Daptone and Truth & Soul, or you enjoy the rapturous sounds of outfits such as the Hot 8 Brass Band, then you are in for a treat when you press play on the debut single from the new Wah Wah 45s signing, The Gene Dudley Group. First things first, The Gene Dudley Group is not, in fact, a group. It is all the work of 27-year-old, London-based multi-instrumentalist Gene Dudley who, over the course of the two-track release, plays trumpet, saxophone, drums, bass, guitar and piano. Nobody would be surprised if they were told that “The Fawcett Negotiation” and “The New Lots Of Cooperstown” were instrumentals ripped from some long-lost, early ’70’s soul classics, featuring a full complement of in-studio musicians, but they are indeed the work of one man.” (USA)

“This is DOPE and I will play on the Bandcamp Weekly next week. NICE.” Andrew Jervis (Bandcamp, USA)

“Fabulously funky hotness” dubdotdash blog (New Zealand)

“Another beauty from the Wah Wah 45s label.” Beatnikonline (UK)
