The Gene Dudley Group represents an outpouring of deep soul and funk music from obscenely talented 27 year-old multi-instrumentalist, Gene Dudley.

The debut album, “Saturday Shifting”, was recorded in a cupboard in Muswell Hill, North London, and features the man himself on trumpet, saxophone, drums, bass, guitar and piano. On a couple of occasions, though, Gene had to budge over to allow fellow musicians Ewan Whyte and Tom Jackson to fit in a play a solo or two, but other than that, everything you hear on this album comes from the mind, mouth, fingers and heart of Mr. Gene Dudley Esq.

Tinged Nugget

Fans of labels like Truth & Soul and Daptone will relish these sonorous soulful offerings, but the influences on this album are wide ranging. Tracks like “When The Gorilla Get Grip’ and “The New Lots Of Cooperstown” conjure up 60’s spy soundtracks, but elsewhere there are afro-beat influences on “The Hilo Bay Halfway” and more easy, introspective moments on “Minnie” and “Do The Stanley Weinberger”.  Just when you think you’ve got Gene Dudley’s sound pinned down, the album culminates with a real game changer in the shaped of the brilliantly titled “Waxing Unwaxed Lemons”, a quirky, electronic tinged nugget that should please many a dance floor.

First Outing

In the live arena, rather than trying to play all the instruments himself, Gene deploys a quartet of top notch young musicians to help him out (whilst Gene mixes it up between bass and keys throughout the set) as witnessed at the recent Hot 8 Brass Band gig in London, The Gene Dudley Group’s debut live show.

Since that first outing, the group have played to much acclaim at venues such as London’s XOYO, and will be celebrating the release of “Saturday Shifting” with a live album launch, in support of label mate Henri-Pierre Noel, at The Jazz Café on July 13th. A night, and an album, not to be missed.

“Aurally pleasing to fans of the Daptone and Truth & Soul sound Dudley’s Funk and Soul offerings such as “The New Lots of Cooperstown” and “When The Gorilla Get Grip” will completely fufill and hit like and El Michels Affair or Menahan Street Band lost tape. A bastion of sounds like Afro Beat (“The Hilo Bay Halfway”), Dub Reggae influenced tracks (“Learn To Jackpot/Teach To Jackpot”) sit along side a left field electronic stomper (“Waxing Unwaxed Lemons”) and blend in perfectly with the Funk and Soul. This record has some library record moments, some 60′s Michael Caine spy thriller moments, and some moments where you can picture yourself feet up, cold beer in hand on your deck chair in the shade relaxing nodding to this great record while someone is grilling some fantastic sausages in your yard. Gene Dudley is an unbelievably talented musician and for fans of hard drum beats, jazzy hooks and horn stabs, this record will not disappoint.”

”It’s gonna be hard not to evoke the influences of the New-York city Retro Soul and Deep Funk scene after listening to the first album of 27 year-old multi-instrumentalist Gene Dudley. The man comes from North London and plays trumpet, saxophone, drums, bass, guitar and piano, with just a few friends fitting in for a solo here and there…. A really impressive first opus, with favorites ‘The New Lots Of Cooperstown’, sounding just like a Truth & Soul production, or ‘When The Gorilla Get Grip’ or the utterly classy ‘The Fawcett Negotiation’, and their Daptone-esque arrangements. Let’s hope that’s just the beginning of a long series of deeply soulful offerings!” Julien Lakshmanan, Paris DJs Playlist June 2013 (France)
